Cloth Config on Fabric and Forge: What to Check

Understand the compatibility checks that matter when installing Cloth Config in Fabric or Forge profiles.

Begin with the running profile

Read the loader name and Minecraft version from the launcher instance you actually use. A separate profile on the same computer may have a different environment. Installation decisions should follow the active instance rather than the loader you remember installing previously.

Use the appropriate library build

Loader labels identify the environment for which a file was published. Do not rename a file or copy it between loader profiles to make it compatible. Check the requirements of the requesting mod and keep the selected library in the same supported environment.

Avoid assuming identical availability

Projects can publish releases for different loaders on different schedules. The existence of one release does not establish that another loader has an equivalent build for the same game version. Read each release entry independently instead of extrapolating from a shared version number.

Verify the dependency after launch

Start the intended profile and review whether the original missing-dependency message has cleared. If it remains, check the instance directory and duplicate files before changing additional mods. A library may provide settings support without appearing as a new gameplay feature.
