Choosing the Right Cloth Config Release

Learn how to match a Cloth Config file to your Minecraft version, loader, and dependent mod without guessing from version numbers.

Treat the game version as the first filter

Start with the exact Minecraft version used by your launcher profile. A version number printed in a featured image is a visual reference, not a compatibility promise. Check the release information for the actual file before installing it.

Match the loader independently

A matching game version alone is insufficient. Files intended for different loaders should not be mixed simply because they share a library name. Confirm the loader for the running instance and compare it with the release label on the dependency you are adding.

Read the dependent mod requirements

The mod requesting Cloth Config may specify a supported range or minimum version. Use that requirement alongside the game and loader filters. Avoid selecting a release only because its number is larger; a newer branch can target a different Minecraft environment.

Keep one compatible copy

Remove duplicate library releases from the instance after preserving a backup outside the mods folder. Launch the profile and review any dependency message that remains. Record the working filename so future troubleshooting starts from a known configuration rather than a guess.
